Choose a Centerpiece with Attitude......

What is your attitude? Choosing a centerpiece must be reflective of your personality, style and overall concept or theme of the wedding. What is the first thing you want your guest to say when they look across the room at your reception? Do you want them to see single flowers, large cluster of flowers, tree branches with crystals, or large plumes of feathers. If I had to use 3 types of centerpieces I would categorize them as follows:

SIMPLE
Simple arrangements are typically used when the venue that you have chosen is over the top or you may find yourself wanting a space at a more expensive time of the year and your floral budget is very tight. Whatever the reason maybe picking one or two types of flowers in a structured design can be just what you are looking for.
Here are a few simple ideas.....

CONTEMPORARY
If you are a trend setter and not afraid to have your reception outdoors, at an art gallery or even at an upscale theatre then trendy, modern and chic should be the type of decor you are going for. These types of centerpieces would have less greenery, can be budget friendly but having more than just roses will have to be your ultimate goal.
Here are a few samples:

EXOTIC
Lastly, if you are a edgy, high drama, like over the top and absolutely love a WOW factor then you will truly love this style. These arrangements are usually very tall, large and full of bold and bright colors and a must have be lots of crystals and bling. I truly love this style because it always tends to have the most surprise effect on guests. As your guest enter the room you will always have pointing, gasp of air, and they all leave with lots to talk about for days to come when seeing these high drama arrangments.

If anyone knows me as a floral designer they will all tell you that orchids are my favorite flower. Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and Ms. Kali Sellars gave me the oppurtunity to showcase my work at their Catering Kickoff event earlier this month. This four foot arrangment consisted of yellow cymbidium orchids, red anthuriums, red james story orchids, equiseedum and palm leaves. We absolutely love to make arrangments that speak to our unique sense of style. Until the next event ~ enjoy!

Are Floral Mocks Ups Necessary?

I have gotten a lot of inquiries from brides local and across the country about do we here at Keisha's Kreations provide a mock up. In my professional experience I feel that if we are handling the entire floral and decor package that mock up is necessary.

If you're very specific about what you want, and you trust your floral team, I wouldn't worry about going over your budget just to see a mock up. There are three basic questions you must ask yourself: Does the floral portfolio and presentation that you see in pictures impress you? Are flowers and event design one of your priorities? Is the comfort you'll gain from seeing a mock up worth trading off somewhere else in your wedding?

Mockups can range anywhere from $250 dollars to $1000 dollars. It depends on how many centerpieces are being mocked up, are linens being provided, chair covers, chargers, napkin folds, stationary, etc. Mock ups take a great deal of thought, time and money to pull together and can be done. As a consumer please be expected to pay for a mock up especially if this is only for a visual. Other alternatives can be to take a trip with your florist to a local wholesaler to view all of the flowers that you have selected with out having to pay for them.

Here are some recent pictures of what to expect at a complete mockup. We provided linens, beaded chargers and 3 different types of centerpieces so that the couple could have a one on one display of what things would look like for their wedding.

I HAD TO POST THIS FROM A FELLOW FLORIST AND BLOGGER!

I love designs that are rich, full, lush, and loaded with good stuff. I can't do inexpensive designs, I try and I just can't. My heart and my soul wants to help every single young lady that comes to me, but I can't create my look cheaply. I try to do inexpensive designs to help girls get on budget, but the good stuff costs. Lots of the good stuff really costs. Every time I discount my prices to help someone out, I create a design that I am less than happy with. In that instance, what do I do? I buy more flowers and I steal a little from one of my kids college funds. When I create a low price point design, I invariably have to put another flower into the design and then another to make it please me artistically. I can't let a design leave here profitable before wonderful, wonderful always come first. A piece or a design that makes my heart sing is far more important to me than a profitable one, it is simply who I am.

I am bringing this subject up because it is a common issue among true floral designers who are passionate about their work. I think it is important for everyone to know what the artist suffers if they are constricted by budget. My look the Holly Heider Chapple Flowers look can't be done cheaply, unless Holly takes it right out of Holly's pocket. Holly Chapple Flower designs are loaded in the yummy and need to be priced accordingly, not to mention the way we go over and over each piece. The time spent on a design in this studio is similar to the birth of a child. I have actually given birth to some of my babies faster than some of my bridal bouquets. Now that is saying something!! Not complaining, just changing, or better yet, just realizing completely who I am.

Airports remain shuttered across Northern Europe

Airports remained shuttered across much of Northern Europe Friday, with widespread disruption expected to continue through the weekend after a volcanic eruption in Iceland blanketed the continent in a huge ash cloud.

Air authorities in the U.K. , Ireland , Norway , Denmark , Sweden , Belgium , the Netherlands and Finland all closed their airspace due to the risks posed by the ash, which can cause engine failure in aircraft.

The closures will affect hundreds of thousands of passengers, with the BBC reporting that around 5,000 flights were cancelled on Thursday alone.
Some airports were also closed in France , Germany and Poland as the ash cloud continued to spread.

Do you alert the bride or do you scramble and find whatever is here and make it work?
Being an event designer for over eight years now I say make it work. I think each situation is a case by case situation and you must really approach the situation carefully. Immediately try to retify the situation by calling every wholesaler in your immediate area, call other designers to see what products they have in their possession, call every local grocery store that has a floral counter and reach out to local floral shops in the city you reside. After reaching out to all of these options then if the situtation has still not fixed itself then I would resume to telling the bride and letting her know that we will do everything possible to make sure that her day will still look amazing.

Bridal Bouquets

Bridal Bouquets are a very valuable asset when speaking the word WEDDING. Most people don't really take the time to really process the time it acutally takes to create the ideal bouquet style, color, floral selection and overall look for each individuals sense of taste. The process from concept to actual design is a very time sensitive one with production starting weeks before a wedding. The first step is to select a color pallette for your acutal bouquet. Most brides are very conservative therefore white, soft ivory and greens tend to be the natural way to go. Here at Keisha's Kreations we try to think out of the box by customizing each bouquet by adding color, tafetta ribbon or dupoini silk, crystals, diamonds, broches, etc.

After the concept and color schemes are nailed down, flowers are then ordered from various sources sometimes as far as Africa, Chile, Holland and New Zealand. Once the flowers arrive it is quite natural that they will need an extreme amount of water, floral nutrients and tender love and care. It has been our experience that even though most flowers can travel safely some of the more delicate flowers sometimes take a turn for the worse. These types of flowers may include cymbidium orchids, hydrangeas, sweet peas, mini callas, freesia, dahalias, stephanotis. These are to only name a few. After being contacted by Sabrina Patrick of Chic Soiree to hang paper lanterns for one of her clients we had a moment and asked ourselves....Who would have thought that paper lanterns which are so simple and inexpensive could add so much to a wedding? This particular wedding was very elegant with rich spring colors such as orange, green and chocholate which really made the space very fun and inviting. Some of the pictures featured below are my absolute favorite of what paper lanterns can do for any ocassion. The lanterns were featured at one of Houston's most beautiful venues and one of my favorite places to work with The Gallery Houston.

Eco Friendly Rose Growers

Recently we blogged on how to use more "go-green" centerpieces for our clients who are trying to be more earth friendly. The premium rose growers at Eufloria Flowers are doing just that. While we're great consumers of roses for all types of events here at Keisha's Kreations, we are looking for more companies who will help us offer the best product that ultimately consumes the least amount of energy and produces fewer waste.

A few interesting highlights about our featured growers company are the following:
*Eufloria recycles the water throughout the operation to nearby pastureland and complimentary crops.
*A system called IPM(Integrated Pest Management) is used throughout the greenhouses to reduce the use of pesticides to a minimum.
*Eufloria uses a method of Hydroponic Growing which allows the roses to be planted in a non-soil system specially treated with coconut fiber. Coconut fiber is a by product derived from coconut growers in Sri Lanka,India and other tropical countries.

I love to surf the world wide web to find inspiration from other florist and decorators all over the country. I think that I have finally narrowed down my search to the hottest new trends of centerpieces. Now more than ever with the way the economy is we much be sensitive to our clients and their budgets. I have been able to find some of the most incredible centerpieces that look faboulous but will make your wallet sing a new tune. I hope you find these findings as interesting as I did.

Many times when choosing flowers for your special ocassion whether it is a wedding, baby shower, intimate dinner party or a wedding; flowers speak many languages. However the container always becomes the conversation piece at the table. I have always been fascinated with all types of shapes, colors and sizes of containers. If it can hold water and foam it will work for me. Here are some of my favorite special containers that I highly recommend for any special event!

Recently I was given the distinct honor of being nominated for the 14th Annual Pinnacle Awards. The pinnancle awards is a gala hosted every year by the Houston Citizen Chamber of Commerce here is Houston, Texas. The African American Business Achievement Pinnacle Awards spotlights and honors African-American businesses that have achieved success by combining vision, determination, commitment, perseverance and dedication to building strong communities. This years guest speaker was Mr. Roland Martin who is CNN contributer, talk show hoster, and author who has captured many audiences attention all over the world. This was truly a milestone for Keisha's Kreations that I will never forget.

Fall is Here

FALL FALL FALL......has arrived! This is my favorite time of year because the color choices for weddings and special events can be whatever you can imagine. My favorite colors are burnt orange, eggplant purple, olive green, chartreuse green apple, and off course garnet red.

Here are several photos of beautiful fall season flowers:

Sunflowers - are reasonably priced for centerpieces and bouquets because just a few sunflowers will go a long way. They come in various patterns and sizes but are all shades of yellows, browns and oranges.

Chrysanthemum - These come in a variety of warm colors (pink, white, reds, oranges) and last a very long time in water. They have woody stems that are best crushed before placing in water.

Hydrangeas - Grows in a variety of pale colors such as white, blues, purples, greens and pinks. White has been a very popular fall wedding flower choice for years.

Scabious - A lovely delicate light purple flower that goes nicely with lavendar flowers.

Dahlias - Available in red, white, pink, yellow and orange. These fall wedding flowers last a long time in water and are easy for the DIYer to work with.

Gladiolas - This flower comes in reds, pinks, greens, purples and oranges.

Natural Trees for Centepieces

So many times I get caught into a whole lot of creative modes because the artist in me takes over the engineer in me. As I have looked around with all of the trees that have been blown down by the devistation of Hurricane IKE here in Houston it gave me ideas for centerpieces. The thought of making tree branches for centerpieces is relatively new to me. Most of the time my "outside of the box" has been with glassware, candleabras, wrought iron/metal or even ceramic containers. As I begin to think more natural I came across the blog of Nettleton Hollow which has elightened me to so much more that is available as a designer.

Eco-Friendly Centerpieces 101

I would have to say that eco friendly weddings are the new phenomena and it is catching the wedding industry by storm. If anyone has ever been around me when it time to clean up after events they will tell you that everything goes in the dumpster from the floral stems to the cut wire and wet unused foam. After educating myself on the positive aspects of recycling and eco-friendly weddings it gave me a new overall perspective. Here at Keisha's Kreations we are going to diligently begin working to recycle, use less floral foam on our designs, and use more local floral products for our special events.
